Ball or Royal pythons (Python regius) are possibly
the most popular snake species for reptile hobbyists in America. They are an extremely
beautiful species having a wide variety of color and pattern mutations. They are
easy to keep, very docile and rarely bite. They make fantastic pets and are a
great teaching tool for schools. But, where do ball pythons come from? Have you
ever seen pictures or film of them in the wild? No? Then, read on!
In
1997, Dr. Steve Gorzula led a field team to survey ball
pythons in Ghana, Africa and to develop a management plan for their sustainable
use. Since submitting their report to CITES (Convention on International Trade
in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora), Ghana, Togo, and Benin have exported
approximately 1.5 million ball pythons to the international pet trade, with 85%
of them destined to the USA alone.
Did you know that the international
pet trade of ball pythons was almost shut down? Did you also know that this survey
is the reason why you can now acquire ball pythons today? |

Ball
pythons rarely bite, but this one bit Owusu. He was so proud! It is a kind of
initiation when someone starts working with snakes and then gets their
first bite. |

We
were in a remote part of the Volta Region catching ball pythons and discussing
the differences between male and female scorpions when a local woman appeared
out of nowhere and got the shock of her life! She ran away without dropping the
water she was carrying on her head. |

"In
the late 1970s and early 1980s, Steve Gorzulas research into
the biology of caimans was comprehensive, insightful and a standard reference
used by other researchers working with other crocodilian species. He later extended
this work into a simple but highly effective management model for the conservation
and sustainable harvesting of caiman. This model is still used in Venezuela today
and applying has led to a demonstrably sustainable management system. The pioneering
mark that Steve Gorzula left with crocodilians in Latin America can never be erased." |

"Steve
Gorzula is one of the most enthusiastic herpetologists I have ever met. He is
unique in extending his interests in snakes and reptiles to the many peoples around
the world who use them for food or other purposes. I wish there were more conservationists
like him." |

"I
love this video because it's raw and uncut and I thank Dr. Gorzula for making
this video available because there's nothing like it anywhere. I'd like to see
those Hollywood "Snake Master" guys try to catch venomous snakes using
just their bare hands like they do in this video! Two thumbs up! " |

"All I can say is WOW, this is
amazing! I've never seen anything like this before and I'm very happy I bought
this DVD. I've learned so much more about ball pythons that I had no idea about
beforehand. Thank you!" |
